Moodboard Design and Image Book Layouting
KEY TAKEAWAYS AND SIGNIFICANT RESULTS
1) Creating a mood board which focused on one central subject, and which would also portray several themes and connotations.
2) Creating an aesthetic for the mood board was definitely a challenge.

3) Choosing typography that would fit my subject (a butterfly), choosing complimentary elements and deriving a colour palette from the images chosen from the mood board that would reflect the themes and values of the subject.

4) It was really challenging to find ways that the subject was depicted in different mediums such as
in film, art and history,
1) I used mood boards created by other designers as inspiration. I observed the aesthetic and layout that was followed and used that as a base to create my own mood board. I used various sources of inspiration, and just as many sources for the derivation of images and complimentary elements.
2) In-depth research on the meaning of a butterfly in various cultural contexts helped resolve depiction problems.

3) I chose Tehika as my central typography for the mood board due to its handwritten feel, as well as its grace and elegance, which matches the ideas of a butterfly perfectly. As a festive, hand-drawn script, it celebrates the feeling of freedom from watching a butterfly soar.

1) A better understanding of moodboard layout design, as well as pinpointing a general aesthetic for the board.
2) Ability to develop a more comprehensive workflow for my future mood boards.
3) Learnt the different ways that the subject was portrayed in different mediums, and how a butterfly can be a symbol of freedom, but also of delicateness. It can be a symbol of spiritual growth and letting go.
4) Gaining a deeper understanding of the ways that the subject is portrayed helps me understand how it can be used in design to stir up emotions in the target audience groups.

KEY TAKEAWAYS AND
SIGNIFICANT RESULTS
1) One of the biggest challenges of the project was coming up with a theme that the story-
line would revolve around. Once that would be decided, then the actual story had to be conconcted.

2) Challenges with the way that the story would be laid out were also prominent, and it took a lot of experimentation to get it right.

3) I faced the challenge of restricting myself to just 8 pages, including 2 cover pages. Telling a story through the restrictions was one challenge I thought long and hard to resolve.
1) Searched existing image books for inspiration. Ultimately, I settled on an Egyptian theme, and a young adult horror story to compress my ideas into a comprehensive form.

2) I decided to choose one central typography, Pirata One for the project, a Modern Gothic font that has correlations to historical typefaces. In addition, its condensed structure and spacing give it excellent performance and rhythm so it can be used as a header font or in short paragraphs. The dynamicity of the font was a central reason for choosing it. Monsterrat Classic was also chosen due to its modern and simplistic letterforms, perfect to symbolise the journey of our characters in modern times.

3) Two central characters were chosen, and also historical & modern contexts were blended into the story to give it more depth. The scarab beetle was one of the main underlying elements the story carried with significant weight.
1) Gaining an understanding the structural and narrative aspects of image book creation, and how robust hierarchical structure can tell a story.
2) Gained insights into the book layout process, considering aspects such as crop and bleed.
3) Examining the colours that were prominent in the images and subsidiary elements that made up each page of the book helped me establish and understand how the central theme carries colours synonymous with the Egyptian theme.
4) Matching the colours to the theme, and considering their implications & what they projected was of vital importance, and to learn how everything came together was inspiring and insightful.
